Overview of Safeguarding Training
Safeguarding refers to the measures taken to protect children, adults at risk, programme participants, staff and communities from abuse, exploitation, neglect, violence and other forms of harm, while promoting their safety, dignity and wellbeing.
In a disability-inclusive programmes, safeguarding is particularly important because people with disabilities—especially children and those who depend on caregivers—may face increased risks of abuse, neglect, exploitation, discrimination and unequal power relationships.
Purpose of Safeguarding Training
The purpose of safeguarding training is to equip staff and programme personnel with the knowledge, skills and confidence to prevent, identify, report and appropriately respond to safeguarding concerns, particularly involving children, persons with disabilities and adults at risk.
Specifically, the training aims to:
- Increase understanding of safeguarding principles, policies and responsibilities.
- Enable staff to recognise signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation and other forms of harm.
- Strengthen staff capacity to prevent safeguarding risks within programmes and service delivery.
- Ensure staff understand appropriate reporting, referral and response procedures when concerns arise.
- Promote safe, respectful and inclusive interactions with children and adults with disabilities.
- Reinforce the principles of confidentiality, dignity, consent and do no harm.
- Strengthen organisational accountability and ensure safeguarding is integrated into everyday programme implementation.
Target Audience
This training is intended for all individuals who have contact with programme participants or have responsibilities that may affect their safety and wellbeing. This may include Project staff, Healthcare and rehabilitation professionals, Teachers, trainers and community facilitators, Volunteers, Peer trainers, Management and leadership teams, drivers, support staff and other personnel – particularly those working directly with vulnerable children and adults with disabilities.
Duration: – The training takes 5 days to complete and may be residential or non-residential depending on preference and logistical arrangement of sponsoring organization or Institution.
