Safeguarding Trainer of Trainers (ToT)
The Safeguarding Trainer of Trainers (ToT) is a Three-day training designed to equip selected staff and safeguarding focal persons with the knowledge, skills and confidence to train others on safeguarding principles and practices within their organisations and programmes.
The training combines safeguarding knowledge with practical facilitation skills, enabling participants to cascade safeguarding messages and strengthen a culture of safety, accountability and protection.
Key areas covered include:
- Understanding safeguarding concepts, principles and terminology.
- Recognising different forms of abuse, exploitation, neglect, violence and discrimination.
- Identifying safeguarding risks, particularly for children, adults at risk and people with disabilities.
- Understanding roles and responsibilities in preventing and responding to safeguarding concerns.
- Safeguarding policies, codes of conduct and expected standards of behaviour.
- Safe reporting, referral and response mechanisms.
- Confidentiality, consent, dignity and the do-no-harm principle.
- Identifying and managing safeguarding risks within programmes and service delivery.
- Practical approaches to safeguarding awareness and prevention.
- Training and facilitation skills, including adult learning approaches, participatory methods and handling sensitive discussions.
- Developing action plans for cascading safeguarding training within participants’ respective organisations.
Target Audience
Priority is given to individuals who have the capacity and authority to cascade the training within their organisation or institution and contribute to strengthening safeguarding systems and practices. These includes:
- Safeguarding focal persons and safeguarding leads within organisations and institutions.
- Programme and project managers responsible for ensuring safeguarding is integrated into programme activities.
- Human Resources and senior management staff responsible for organisational safeguarding systems and staff conduct.
- Training and capacity-building officers who can cascade safeguarding training to staff and partners.
- Healthcare and rehabilitation professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, social workers and other frontline personnel.
- Teachers, trainers and community facilitators working with children and people with disabilities.
- Partner organisation and DPO staff involved in programme delivery and community engagement.
- Child protection and social service professionals involved in prevention, referral and response.
- Peer trainers, volunteers and community-based personnel who have regular contact with programme participants.
- Faith-based and educational institution representatives responsible for safeguarding within their institutions.
Expected Outcome
At the end of the ToT, participants are expected to be able to confidently deliver safeguarding training to colleagues, partners, volunteers, caregivers and other relevant stakeholders, while also serving as safeguarding champions within their organisations.
The training therefore contributes to strengthening institutional safeguarding systems, staff capacity and accountability, ensuring that safeguarding is integrated into everyday programme implementation and service delivery.
