Referral, Follow Up and Screening Training

The role of community staff is critical in wheelchair service provision. Many people with a disability in less resourced settings are isolated, and often do not know what services are available to them. Where a wheelchair service has been established, wheelchair users may be unaware of the service, or have limited resources with which to access the service.

There are many staff working in less resourced settings who meet people with disabilities through their work in community-based rehabilitation programs or community health clinics. These staff can assist in identifying and referring children and adults who require a wheelchair to a wheelchair service.

Once a wheelchair user returns to their community after receiving their wheelchair, they may benefit from additional input to help them use and maintain their new product to ensure they stay safe, develop optimum levels of participation, and ensure their product lasts for as long as possible. Community staff are well placed to provide this kind of support and to help to increase community awareness to facilitate inclusion.

This training is aimed at increasing the capacity of such staff to enable them to:

  • Identify people who require a wheelchair
  • Refer them to their local wheelchair service
  • Where practical, to provide follow up and support for wheelchair users in the community.

The training targets all community partners such as

  • Community health workers.
  • Community leader.
  • Volunteers in the community
  • Groups of people with disability.
  • Any other service provider in the community such as teachers.
