UBUNTU TRAINING

Purpose of the Training

To help families and caregivers of children with developmental disabilities to understand their child and to build support networks that will improve the care and inclusion that their child receives in their local community.

Key objectives:

  • To improve the knowledge of caregivers and family members about their child’s condition.
  • To promote positive attitudes towards having a child with a disability within the family and the community.
  • To equip caregivers with skills to care for their child.
  • To promote problem solving and peer support amongst caregivers.
  • To engage with the wider family and community on how to improve care and support.
  • To strengthen linkages and referrals and promote wider inclusion.

Target Audience

  • Mothers/fathers/caregivers/grandparents of children with developmental disabilities.
  • More than one family member can attend sessions (its good if they do).
  • Children of any age can join but the earlier you begin the better. If siblings come along, this is a nice opportunity for play.
  • 1-2 community volunteers. They can facilitate play with the children. Caregivers will also learn more from seeing how their child can be stimulated through play.

Scope of the training

The training includes:

  • 12 modules of activities, including group work and discussion.

Groups may meet weekly, twice a month or monthly. 6-10 children with their caregivers are ideal for at most 3 hours per sitting.
